If you find yourself traveling in the Northwoods on your way to Lake Superior, you might consider stopping off for a pack of cigarettes before you get there. You’ll need them to curry the favor of Mishipeshu, the Great Lynx and guardian of lakes and rivers.
“Some lakes are known to change their appearance abruptly (such as with strong wind or fog), to contain deep depressions, or to have a particular coloration. These are all signs of the Great Lynx’s presence.”
The Canadian Encyclopedia
Possessing the features of both a serpent and a cat, Mishipeshu dwells in the underwater caves and tunnels of the Great Lakes, allowing him to move swiftly between them. While he doesn’t seem to eat those that cross him, he has been known to stir up violent whirlwinds and dangerous rapids that drag unworthy travelers into the depths. While he can also be a generous deity, providing bountiful fishing and enchanted copper to his supplicants, only members of the Ojibwe tribe are able to request his assistance.
Of course, since his horns are said to be made of the same copper gifted to his followers, you could always try battling him to gain your prize. But you’re probably better off tossing him a Lucky Strike and being on your way.
